Robert E. Newell

Robert E. Newell, 91, of Washington Court House, died Saturday, January 26, 2013, at 6 a.m. at Carriage Court Assisted Living in Washington Court House where he had been residing the past 14 months.  His cheery “Hi Neighbor” will be heard no more.

            Bob was born October 13, 1921 in Ross County, Ohio at South Salem to James F. and Esta Beechler Newell.  He lived most of his life in Fayette and Ross Counties.

            Before his retirement in 1977, he had been a turn foreman at Armco for 26 years.

            He was an active member of the Good Hope United Methodist Church and an Navy veteran of World War II.  He was a 57-year life member, with perfect attendance, of the Good Hope Lions Club and was a past president, treasurer, zone chairman and a Melvin Jones Fellow of Lions International.  He was the 2007-2008 Zone 2 Nominee for Lion of the Year.  He was a long time member and supporter of the Miami Trace Boosters Club.

            Bob was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Lester and Arthur Newell; four sisters, Lena Poole, Myrtle Hixon, Thelma Matson and Helen Kelly and his beloved step daughter, Barbara Linton.

            He is survived by his wife, the former Pat Armstrong Jenkins whom he married June 24, 1972; two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. and Shirley Newell of Washington Court House and Jerry L. and Cheri Newell of Simpsonville, KY; two step sons, Larry Jenkins and his wife, Denise, of Centerville and Gary A. Jenkins of Ypsilanti, MI; 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

            The funeral will be Thursday, January 31, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Good Hope United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jon H. Cook, pastor at the church, officiating.  Burial will follow in the South Salem Cemetery in Ross County.

            Friends may call at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. where a Lions Club service will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m.
