Charles R. Shaper, 95, of Washington Court House, Ohio died Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at 10:35 a.m. at the Court House Manor Nursing Home where he was admitted Saturday.
Mr. Shaper was born November 14, 1917 in Wilmington, Ohio to Emmett K. and Grace Hawk Shaper. He was a graduate of Wayne Township High School in Clinton County and moved to Fayette County in 1935 and to Washington Court House in 1960.
Following his retirement as a farmer, he was a salesman for TSC.
He was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church; a 50-year member and past president of the Good Hope Lions Club; a 60-year member and past officer of Washington Lodge #129 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks; he served fifteen years on the Fayette County Fair Board and 50 years on the race committee, the last 35 years as chief judge. He was a life member of the Fayette County Historical Society and a member of the Fayette County Genealogical Society.
Mr. Shaper was preceded in death by a son, Roger Neil Shaper in 1969 and a sister, Wanda Muller in 2012.
He is survived by his wife, the former M. Caroline Garringer whom he married September 19, 1948; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Thorne and Michelle Toth Shaper of Hagerstown, MD; three grandchildren, Kit Shaper of Fayetteville, GA, Tyler Shaper of Conway, SC and Brady Shaper of Hagerstown and two nephews, Charles L. Marshall of West Milton and Edwin L. Marshall of Beavercreek and their families.
In keeping with his request, cremation took place.
Arrangements for a memorial service, followed by a Lions Club service, to be held at the Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Washington Court House with the Rev. James A. Kiger, Jr. officiating, will be announced when the details are completed.
Burial of the cremains will be at a later date in Washington Cemetery.
