The program calls upon teenagers to act as peer educators for safe driving practices.
A pilot program that aims to put teenagers in roles of peer leadership for safe-driving instruction will be launched next month in Pickaway County.
The program called "You Are the Key, Shape the Future", is a partnership with Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) and Safe Communities of Pickaway County.
Safe Communities Director Teresa Carper-Chaney says they received the pilot project based largely on the initiative shown through last year's Teen Seat Belt Challenge among Pickaway County schools. The challenge resulted in a 12% increase in teen seat belt usage. This statistic caught the attention of state and federal traffic safety officials, which led to this pilot project.
The pilot program is funded by the National Highway Traffic safety Administration, Ohio Department of Public Safety and S.A.D.D.
