Spencer Johnson appears to have stolen a truck in West Jefferson
An inmate that walked away from a prison work group earlier this week may have stolen a truck from the West Jefferson Water Department early Thursday.
Spencer Johnson has been on the run since taking off from a London Correctional Facility work crew picking up trash along I-70 near State Route 29 in Madison County.
West Jefferson Police Chief Terry Ward says when construction workers arrived at the water plant Thursday they found a refueling truck missing and the gate to the facility smashed.
"We found a pair of boots that were exchanged for a pair of Rocky boots and the boots that were left behind have been identified by the state investigators as boots that are issued by the prisons," said West Jefferson Police Chief Terry Ward.
The theft was captured on surveillance video, but Ward says the images are grainy and not very good. You can see the Ford F-250 pickup truck drive through the fence at about 12:50am.
"The refueling truck has 300 gallons of fuel on it. He's got all the gas he needs to go anywhere," Ward said.
The truck belongs to M.R.M. Construction, a Gallipolis company that has been doing water line repair work for West Jefferson. The vehicle is black with Ohio license plate PHT 3910 and extra-wide tires.
Johnson had been serving time for burglary and possessing criminal tools.
