Authorities in Highland County say a concentrated number of vandalism has taken place in Liberty and Union townships.
Some residents of Liberty and Union townships in Highland County have fallen victim to vandalism. Sheriff Ron Ward said the suspects are putting chemicals into plastic pop bottles, capping them, and placing them into mailboxes.
"Once they're placed in a mailbox, it's usually within 30 seconds that the explosion takes place due to the chemical reaction," said Sheriff Ward.
While no injuries have yet been reported, Sheriff Ward warns potential victims to be cautious of these small loud explosions.
"The dangers are chemical burns as these devices do leave residue on the mailbox," he said. "If you find one, just call law enforcement; don't touch it, don't move it."
He said evidence has been sent to BCI for forensic evaluation and possible development of suspects.
