The scam artists make false claims of changes in Medicare and then seek personal information.
Local seniors citizens are being targeted in a phone scam. Cheryl Stockwell, of the Fayette County Commission on Aging, said phone calls have been going out to seniors in which the scammers claim there have been changes to Medicare and then ask for personal information, such as bank account and Social Security numbers.
"If you have given any information like that, you need to notify your bank right away (and) get your account closed down," said Stockwell. "Also, if you've given out your Social Security number, could you please call me at 335-2159?"
She said the scammers' caller ID is showing up as "PROMPT N MTR WGA."
