Old Carmel School Fire

The amount of damage was not estimated and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Brushcreek Firefighters were called out to a structure fire at the old Carmel schoolhouse on State Route 753 in Carmel Sunday.

Upon arrival at the scene they reported heavy smoke and flames showing and called for additional departments to respond. In all, seven different departments responded to the fire. Responding with manpower and equipment for mutual aid was: Hillsboro, Paint Creek, Marshall, Bainbridge, Leesburg, and Lynchburg.

The structure was occupied at the time of the fire but all residents were able to escape unharmed. Hillsboro Fire Department was able to use their tower to ventilate the roof.

Chief James Pitts of the Brushcreek Fire Dept talked about getting the call, "We have a station right down the road and was able to get here pretty quick and knock the fire down. We just put our tanker in service today so we were able to get here pretty fast with some water."
