Police are reporting they are even being used by a scam

Hillsboro Police are warning residents about a telephone scam, that has even dared to “spoof” the police department.

An elderly woman reportedly received three phone calls from a male subject, claiming he was with the police department. The caller ID on her phone did show Hillsboro Police Department, where the male claimed he had been in contact with the FBI about how money the victim had won from Publishers Clearinghouse had been claimed by another person. He continued that if the victim would send him $3,000- he could clear up the matter.

After the elderly woman’s son called the Hillsboro Police, it was discovered the scam uses a telephone APP called “Phone Spoofing”, which will actually show on Caller ID the number the scammer claims to be calling from.

Police advise the public if you believe you are the victim of attempts at fraud, call their office.
