The mayor says property should not be allowed to run-down as it sits vacant
Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings has asked council for an ordinance that would deal with vacant properties, that are allowed to sit in disrepair.
Hastings says that is what anyone driving into Hillsboro sees, which is a black eye for the city. He says the owner has a responsibility to take care of the property.
The mayor agrees this it would put more strain on the already understaffed code enforcement department, which is why he wants to know if they can get an ordinance that has teeth in it, before moving forward.
A proposed cable franchise fee increase, could bring in more than $30,000 per year to help with the code enforcement.
