Children, the elderly, and mail carriers are the three most likely groups to be bitten.

Saturday kicks off National Dog Bite Prevention Week. Letter Carriers are the third most likely group to be bitten by a dog; children and the elderly rank numbers one and two.

The US Postal Service wants pet owners to be made aware that if their dog attacks a letter carrier the owner could be held liable for medical expenses and other costs, which could run into thousands of dollars.

Responsible pet ownership includes making sure pets are properly restrained, as last year, nearly 5,600 letter carriers were attacked while delivering the mail.
