Students included from Miami Trace and Circleville
Eleven young Ohioans have been named recipients of $1,000 college scholarships from the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation.
The Local Scholarship winners for 2012 are, Andrea Black of Orient, Mariah Carey of Mount Gilead, Amy Jo Frost of Bloomingburg, Mara Gordon of Wellington, Lauren Pigg of Brookville, Sierra Jepsen of Amanda, Aaron Sollars of Washington CH, Sara Peterson of Sabina and Sytske Miedema of Circleville.
The Foundation, supported by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, annually recognizes Ohio students for their academic effort, engagement in their communities and career interests that link agriculture to community service, education or scientific research.
Carey, Frost and Miedema were honored by The Women’s Leadership in Agriculture Scholarship Program, which was established by the Charlotte R. Schmidlapp Fund, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee. The Fund is one of the oldest in the nation and supports academic institutions, social service and charitable organizations providing opportunities "to ennoble, to uplift and to strengthen the lives of young women." Carey graduated from Mount Gilead High School and plans to study animal science and agricultural communications. Frost is a graduate of Miami Trace High School and is studying agricultural and extension education at OSU. Miedema graduated from Circleville High School and plans to attend Ohio State and major in food science and nutrition.
Black, Jepsen, Peterson and Sollars are winners of the Darwin Bryan Scholarships. . Black graduated from Grove City High School and is studying nursing at Capital University. Jepson graduated from Amanda-Clearcreek High School and plans to attend OSU to study agriculture. Peterson, a graduate of Miami Trace High School, plans to major in agricultural business and economics at OSU. Sollars is also a Miami Trace graduate and is an agricultural engineering student at OSU.
In addition to its scholarship programs, The Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation offers Agriculture Action and Awareness Grants to small, community-based service groups throughout Ohio.
