Resignation amid layoffs to volunteer firefighters
Hillsboro City Council and the mayor had a surprise waiting for them Monday night as many local Fire and EMS Crews attended the standing room only Hillsboro City Council meeting. They came to speak about the recent layoffs of local township volunteer firefighters.
Everyone was surprised when Hillsboro's Fire Chief Jerry Powell read his letter of resignation Monday night at the meeting, Powell said in conclusion of his resignation "I will aways be grateful for having been allowed into the brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters." He was given a standing ovation by everyone in attendance.
Many of the local firemen and their families who were in attendance, stated they were not properly notified of their termination, claiming to have found out about it by reading the newspaper.
