Ross County Republican Chair Diane Carnes said the 85th districts county chairs recently conducted interviews and sent their recommendation to Speaker of the House William Batchhelder.
Gary Scherer of Circleville has been selected by the Republican Caucus to fill the vacent 85th Ohio House District seat of former Rep. Bob Peterson, who was appointed to the Ohio Senate.

Gary Scherer owns 70 Jackson Hewitt franchises throughout Ohio, and he co-founded and served as president of Harr & Scherer, CPAs from 1994 to 2005. Prior to that, he co-founded Snyder, Scheffler, Scherer & Fast in Lancaster in 1984. A past member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs, he has served as the president of four state chapters of the National Society of Accountants for Cooperatives. Additionally, he has been the president of the Circleville Oil Company since 2006.
A member of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation and the National Rifle Association,Scherer also has served as president of the Circleville Rotary Club and the Circleville-Pickaway Chamber of Commerce.
Scherer graduated from The Ohio State University in 1976 with a degree in accounting. He lives with Debbie, his wife of 35 years. They have three children and six grandchildren.
