iHeartRadio Music Awards: Thomas Rhett Wins Big

Dierks Bentley, Thomas Rhett, Kelsea Ballerini and Chris Stapleton were the country big winners at Sunday's iHeartRadio Music Awards. Thomas also put in a performance.

Dierks won Country Song of the Year for "Somewhere on a Beach, " Thomas was named Country Artist of the Year, Kelsea took Best New Country while Chris won Country Album of the Year for Traveller.

Thomas put in a variety show version of “Star of the Show,” which started on a couch and ended up with a crew of interpretive dancers flanking him for some reason.

The tightly wound telecast maintained the fast-paced, blink-and-you’ll-miss-something attitude it has shown over the years, packing plenty of awards and performances into its two hours of airtime. Producers helped speed things along by presenting a slew of six-second acceptance speeches via Snapchat, while the artists cut to the chase for short, sharp takes on the hits.

Katy Perry opened the show by showing off her new haircut, a knockoff of Miley’s old one, for a kid-accompanied run through “Chained to the Rhythm.”

Big Sean got a lot of love from his peers in a star-studded intro, and lived up to it with a head-bobbing, booty-call ready “Bounce Back.”

Miley Cyrus hit the stage to introduce little sister Noah, and rave about her talents, saying she “wanted to be like her when [she] grows up.”  The 17-year-old helped viewers ignore her disastrous heart-on-her-crotch outfit by delivering a big-time rendition of her first single, “Never Needed You.”

Ed Sheeran mixed things up a bit by accompanying himself on guitar and synth for “Shape of You,” then proving he could actually afford a band by running to a second stage to toss off a driving version of “Castle on the Hill.”

The Chainsmokers marked their big night by tossing up a two-fer, bringing out Chris Martin to differentiate the new “Something Just Like This” from their soundalike last single, “Paris.”

Shawn Mendes, described as “everyone’s crush,” turned the sincere-guy heat level to serious smolder with “Mercy,” which had a good chunk of the female viewership swooning.

Bruno Mars, who was honored with the annual Innovator Award, put together another one of his retro-yet-modern performances, stringing together soulful snippets of “Treasure” and “That’s What I Like” with silky smooth precision.

In terms of acceptance speeches, most people stuck to the script. Exceptions included Justin Timberlake  who took home Song of the Year for “Can’t Stop the Feeling” with a speech featuring one bleeped expletive and plenty of kind words for oppressed communities. Chris Martin flipped the script by bringing three of the little kids from Katy Perry’s routine on to accept the Best Tour Award as “the other” members of Coldplay.
